According to Foot Mercato, Gennaro Gattuso is planning to quit Olympique de Marseille after a run of terrible results have left the manager questioning his ability to turn around their fortunes.
Gattuso replaced Marcelino in the middle of the season but has failed to improve results for the club as the team drifts further away from their aim of qualifying for European football.
The loss to Stade Brestois yesterday evening looked like the final straw in a decision that has been brewing for some time. Marseille have only managed to win one of their last nine games since mid-December.
And that one victory came against a fifth-tier opponent, US Thionville Lusitanos, which Gattuso’s side only managed to win 1-0. Gattuso has railed against the perceived lack of effort from his players, and it appears that he no longer believes he is capable of motivating his squad.
As he stated in his post-match press conference, “When you hit rock bottom, you have to take responsibility. It’s my responsibility. There is nothing else to say. The table? The truth is that we’re going to have to start looking behind us. We can no longer speak about Europe. We just need to take the necessary points to be calm in the standings.”
