The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has announced that Gennaro Gattuso will be the new national team manager.
Former head coach Luciano Spalletti was sacked last week after the Azzurri suffered a 3-0 defeat to Norway.
"Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football, the blue jersey is like a second skin for him," FIGC President Gabriele Gravina said about the appointment.
"His motivation, his professionalism and his experience will be fundamental to face the next commitments of the national team in the best way.
"Aware of the importance of the objective that we want to achieve, I thank him for the availability and total dedication with which he has accepted this challenge, sharing the FIGC's project of overall development of our football, in which the blue jersey has a strategic centrality."
Gattuso has had several club spells since hanging up his boots and becoming the manager. However the fiery figure has yet to stay in a job for more than two seasons.
The 47-year-old's last role was in charge of Croatian side Hajduk Split where he oversaw 43 games, winning 20, drawing 14, and losing 9.
