AC Milan are having difficulties signing their number one target for the right wing, Samuel Chukwueze, so they are exploring an alternative option.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the management are keen on Gustav Isaksen of FC Midtjylland, a team that today has more than something in common with the Rossoneri because they too use the ‘Moneyball’ methods.
Isaksen ticks a lot of boxes for Milan: he is young, compatible with Stefano Pioli’s ideas, has ample room for growth and has a market value which is currently within reach but could explode in time.
In addition, he plays for Midtjylland, a club that has grown in recent years with the strength of mathematics and in which Billy Beane – known as ‘Mr. Moneyball’ and an adviser to Gerry Cardinale – also holds a share. This should not be overlooked if concrete negotiations begin.
Isaksen’s name has been in Milan’s notebooks for some time now and the player closed the last season with remarkable numbers, racking up 22 goals and 9 assists in 45 appearances playing mostly as a right winger. Two of these came against Lazio in the Europa League.
For Giorgio Furlani and Geoffrey Moncada, the 22-year-old is among the most intriguing profiles because of his numbers. Several European clubs have already asked for information and Milan continue to study him.
Priority is currently given to the Chukwueze issue but Villarreal continues to ask for €30m for the Nigerian, an amount considered excessive. Milan could turn to Mehdi Taremi for the non-EU spot as a striker, then sign Isaksen.
