In the midst of all the shortcomings this season, AC Milan have given themselves and the fans a light – Tijjani Reijnders’ contract extension, but it will not start until next season.
With the nuclear fallout from the past week, the renewal of Reijnders’ deal acts as a little break from the negatives of this season. Whilst they still remain, there can be a slight glimmer of hope about things moving forwards.
The midfielder signed his extension on Monday afternoon, stating that he did not want to be anywhere else, and that Milan was ‘home’ to him and his family, which is fantastic to hear, as the chances of him seeing out that contract likely rise.
Nevertheless, his contract will not actually begin until the next season, as Gazzetta dello Sport write.
Due to limits in Italy on contract lengths, the Rossoneri will actually postpone the signing until the beginning of the 2025/26 season to take advantage of the five-year rule for clubs – which will allow him to stay until 2030, rather than the 2029 season.
With this new deal, he will see his earnings rise from €1.7 million per season to more than the expected €3.5m, but rather near €4m net per season.
In many ways, it is similar to how the club operated in the Francesco Camarda situation, delaying officialities until the following season to ensure the most value is found in this regard.
