GdS: Sportiello, Gabbia and Thiaw – Milan’s reserves shine at the back

AC Milan secured one point at Allianz Stadium against Juventus last night after keeping a clean sheet. For once, the Rossoneri did well defensively and this was despite playing with several reserves, as highlighted by a report.

Due to the suspensions of Davide Calabria, Theo Hernandez and Fikayo Tomori, Stefano Pioli was forced to field Yunus Musah, Matteo Gabbia, Malick Thiaw and Alessandro Florenzi from start. Not ideal, in other words, but the quartet did well from start to finish.

As highlighted by today’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (see photo below), Milan took their tally up to 70 points (same as last season) thanks to a great defensive display. A point was needed and the Rossoneri brought it home, opting for hard work instead of flair this time out.

It was the first clean sheet since March 11th and doing it with a completely new defence is impressive. Sportiello made several good saves in goal while Thiaw won the individual battle with Dusan Vlahovic. Gabbia was his usual positive self and the full-backs, Musah and Florenzi, only found themselves in difficulty a few times.

Something will inevitably change in the summer, as the newspaper continues, with Simon Kjaer likely to depart and the Kalulu-Tomori-Thiaw-Gabbia quartet not considered enough by the management. A full-back and a centre-back should arrive, but for now the Rossoneri got a positive response.
