AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli is weighing up two alternative formations for his side to shift into compared to the standard 4-2-3-1, according to a report.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport report, the first alternative system that Pioli has in mind is a 4-3-3 which was seen in glimpses last season. It involves a back four of Davide Calabria, Pierre Kalulu, Fikayo Tomori and Theo Hernandez plus Sandro Tonali and Ismael Bennacer in the midfield.

The third midfielder would be Yacine Adli but this role could also be taken by Tommaso Pobega or Rade Krunic. Charles De Ketelaere would be on the right (Saelemaekers or Messias as back-up), Olivier Giroud the centre-forward (or Origi) and Rafael Leao on the left.

The second formation is a bit more radical as it involves a three-man defence. Pierre Kalulu, Simon Kjaer and Fikayo Tomori would be the three centre-backs with Calabria and Theo as wing-backs. Tonali and Bennacer would be the double pivot with Leao on the left, De Ketelaere (or Adli) on the right and Giroud (or Origi) as the striker.
