GdS: ‘Now choose’ – Zirkzee vs. Sesko battle on as Milan prepare to invest

AC Milan’s budget will be largely depleted by a new No.9 this summer, and a report has claimed that the club are beginning negotiations with their two primary targets.

Olivier Giroud’s departure was only confirmed recently, but everyone has known his destiny for a few months. Regardless of the outcome chosen by the Frenchman, Milan have been looking to invest in a new striker for a while, and after the investment was postponed from January, the summer now awaits.

Several names have been linked with the prestigious post, a role that in recent times has haunted the Rossoneri. However, two names are believed to be able to take the reigns that Giroud will leave, and those are Joshua Zirkzee and Benjamin Sesko.

This morning’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) has claimed that the incoming striker will not be changed by the managerial decision, given the belief that a goalscorer scores goals in any system. Therefore, the two preferences have been selected, and now Milan must choose.

Zirkzee’s profile is admired by the management, and after a strong showing this season, this admiration has risen. We reported late in 2023 that the Diavolo had been watching the Dutchman, and this interest has only grown, powered by his €40 million price tag.

Whilst there are Premier League admirers, reports have suggested that Zirkzee would prefer to stay in Italy for another season with less pressure, which could give Milan an advantage.

Then, there is Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenian international is a different profile to the one offered by Zirkzee, but he also has a high potential ceiling and a natural goalscoring threat. With seven goals in his last seven games for RB Leipzig, he can defeat the arguments against his quality.

However, there is a setback in the wings. With his recent performances and the interest in him, Leipzig have started to talk with him and his agent about a potential renewal. Given he will travel to the European Championships this summer, his price could rise further than the €65m quoted currently, the report suggests, but Milan remain keen.
