Amid the apprehension that Ismael Bennacer’s absence could end up being a very long one, AC Milan are targeting a midfield reinforcement in January and there are four names that stand out.
According to what is being reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) this morning, Paulo Fonseca is having to ask his current pairing of Tijjani Reijnders and Youssouf Fofana to work overtime because of the lack of a natural deputy for both.
The more the duo are stretched, the more they run the risk not being able to keep up this pace until the end of the season. In January, therefore, Geoffrey Moncada and co. could go after not one but two midfielders to try and give depth to the department.
Morten Frendrup of Genoa is the latest name to emerge as a potential back-up for Fofana and he would cost around €20m, but Johnny Cardoso of Real Betis and the USA national team is also considered a candidate.
In terms of signing a box-to-box player who can deputise Reijnders, Milan could turn back to Chelsea talent Carney Chukwuemeka after being linked in the summer. Not only that, but Cesare Casadei – who declared himself a boyhood Milan fan yesterday – is also on the list.
