If AC Milan were to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League, it would provide a nice sum of cash to invest into covering a key position.

Today’s edition of the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanLive) reports that getting through to the last 16 is worth around €20m for the Rossoneri, a sum deriving from the UEFA bonus for the passage of the round (approximately €9.6m) but also from the market pool and the revenues from additional ticket and matchday sales. That hypothetical €20m would be invested by Milan in a single central defender in January, who will have to replace the injured Simon Kjaer between now and the rest of the season, plus likely be a pillar of the future.

In Paolo Maldini’s notebook there are two names: Nikola Milenkovic of Fiorentina and Luiz Felipe of Lazio. These are profiles that have been popular for some time with the Rossoneri management and in January they could move.

Milenkovic is attracted by the idea of a move to Milan, but the hypothesis of a €15m release clause has been denied. Meanwhile, a pursuit of Luiz Felipe is simpler because his contract is expiring in June and he is therefore ready to leave Lazio, even if Lotito is a hard nut to crack.
