AC Milan and Inter have certainly improved in the last few years and now find themselves consistently at the top of Serie A again. Compared to other cities and prominent rivalries, Milano is the football capital of Europe.

Today’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (see photo below) has highlighted the difference between the prominent rivalries in Europe. Milan and Inter, in fact, are the only ones occupying the top two positions in the league standings.

Just five years ago, the situation was significantly different for both Milan and Inter, and few would have predicted the impressive growth path. Stefano Pioli and Antonio Conte took charge, with the clubs investing resources (not just money but also ideas) to return to the top.

This changes the winds in Serie A, first with Inter’s Scudetto in 2021 and then Milan’s in 2022. Today more than ever, the Milano derby is associated with a battle at the top of the standings, two games that could decide the Scudetto race.

Taking a look at other prominent rivalries and cities in Europe, from Madrid to London, none of them can offer what Milano currently has. While Real Madrid and Arsenal find themselves at the top of the standings, their rivals Atletico Madrid and Tottenham are both in fifth place.

In Manchester, meanwhile, Man City remains ahead of Man Utd on almost no fronts. As the newspaper puts it, Milano is the football capital of Europe, at least for now.
