GdS: Leao ‘statistically better’ than Vinicius Jr – a chance to find himself again

Although they will spend the game at different sides of the pitch, spectators will be keeping a keen eye on AC Milan’s Rafael Leao and Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. with the duo being two of the best wingers in the world.

Football often has moments when stories align really nicely, and Tuesday offers that. Milan need more from Leao, and this is being demanded of him. Whereas Madrid want more for Vinicius after the Brazilian was beaten to the Ballon d’Or.

For these reasons, the fixture is shaping up to be a game dictated by the wingers. Already the Brazilian has shown his quality in this European campaign, bagging a hat-trick against last season’s finalists Borussia Dortmund.

As a whole, the Madrid winger displays ‘more efficiency and presence’ in games which is what sets them apart, according to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Radio Rossonera). However, statistically, Leao is better, which creates a paradox of sorts.

The Portuguese has 68.4% successful dribbles this season, as opposed to Vini’s 38.5%, albeit this comes with the caveat of the Brazilian attempting almost 40 more dribbles. Per game, Leao is also better averaging 3.25 successful dribbles per game, compared to the 2.64 from Vinicius.

Without contributions, Leao will be seen as the inferior option, understandably so. However, he has a chance to prove himself as one of the best in the world with a positive performance on Tuesday – something which everyone benefits from.
