GdS: ‘Give your all’ – why Milan still have ‘maximum confidence’ in Fonseca

AC Milan’s head coach Paulo Fonseca has been scrutinised heavily so far, and after the international break, questions will probably still be asked for a while. However, the club are confident in his abilities.

Fonseca’s position at Milan is a strange one. In the first international break, there were questions about his future, and then after the defeat to Liverpool, the cogs began to move, and other managers were being considered.

Nevertheless, things did not shape up in a way to move from Fonseca, and instead, he remained. Two defeats against Bayer Leverkusen and Fiorentina have brought the questions back to life, but the management are not worried.

Milan’s confidence

In this morning’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below), the paper suggests that the Portuguese head coach has not given up an inch, and the two bad results have not dented his belief. He has already told the squad to look forward rather than focus on the past, and move on with expectations rather than succumb to previous mistakes.

His words are strengthened by the management’s ‘maximum confidence’ in him, and the defeats do not concern them. Instead, the intention is to allow the process longer, as the differences between Pioli-ball and Fonseca’s methods are clear, everyone must give their all.

Udinese presents the first final of Fonseca’s career, and it is one of several between now and November. He must win them all.

Shared respect

Whilst the squad may not be the one of his dreams, the paper suggests, it is one that has potential, and his aspirations are high, so he will not change his system to compensate. So far, it is a mistake-filled game, but the numbers show where the work must be done to compete at a higher level.

The Rossoneri must be smarter in front of both goals, have more composure when attacking, and be more resolute in front of their own. A simple task in theory, but a challenging one to fulfil. However, the ‘troops’ must look forward, be empowered by the manager, and listen to their mistakes and learn from them.

Now, the squad awaits ‘real answers’, statements of intent from key players, and a return to moving forward. Confidence is present in everyone’s ability to shift momentum, but this must become a tangible success.
