AC Milan are expected to make significant changes in the summer and according to a Gazzetta dello Sport, this will likely include signing players to strengthen the Italian core of the club.

Indeed, we could see a Milan side that is a lot more ‘Italian’ next season, per the pink newspaper (see photo below). The disappointing season has convinced the management that the Rossoneri need to return to their roots, thus strengthening the Italian core of the team.

Proven quality on the flanks

While it’s true that a lot will depend on the departures, Milan will likely add an Italian winger to the team this season. There are two very concrete, or at least hot, names: Riccardo Orsolini of Bologna and Federico Chiesa of Liverpool.

The first is trained by Vincenzo Italiano, the No.1 candidate for Milan’s bench, and the manager’s arrival would certainly fuel the links. Chiesa, meanwhile, needs to restart his career elsewhere after struggling to get playing time under Arne Slot’s management.

Orsolini has a price tag of around €25m, while the obstacle for Chiesa could be his salary: €5m plus bonuses. A significant salary, but one that Liverpool could be willing to pay in part, if the player were to push for a loan transfer to the Rossoneri.

Centre-backs and a No.9

With Abraham destined to return to Roma and Jovic in the balance, Milan are also considering the arrival of No.9 deputy to Santiago Gimenez. Udinese’s Lorenzo Lucca has been on their list for a long time, and he seems to be ready for the big leap in his career.

The Rossoneri are monitoring the situation, knowing full well that the Fruili side will hardly settle for less than €30m. It would be an expensive price for someone who would effectively be an alternative, mainly anyway, especially if Milan miss out on European competitions.

In defence, meanwhile, the hunt for a centre-back has been open for a while. In recent months, Milan have been studying Pietro Comuzzo from Fiorentina and Diego Coppola from Verona, but in recent weeks the stock of Parma’s Giovanni has also risen.

The opportunity

Finally, there is another situation that Milan are keeping an eye on with particular interest. Lorenzo Pellegrini, the Roma midfielder, has a contract which will expire in 2026 and negotiations for a renewal have been at a standstill for some time.

His farewell has thus transformed from possible to probable. Of course, they will have to deal with the competition, but Milan are there, especially if Reijnders were to go to City.
