AC Milan are very much in the race to sign Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna this summer but they face competition from Arsenal, according to a report.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) are reporting that Arsenal sent a scout to Italy on Saturday evening, more specifically to the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara to follow Bologna’s match against Monza so they could watch Zirkzee up close.

Bologna’s CEO Claudio Fenucci made it clear what the club’s wish is regarding the Dutch striker, stating: “We would like to keep everyone in red and blue, which is their colour.”

The former Bayern Munich striker, however, will be the prized piece of the summer transfer window, with many teams having already established themselves as contenders to land him.

Milan have been on his trail for months as per the paper and as Pietro Mazzara reported earlier, while in recent weeks Juventus have also joined the race.

Bologna will try to keep him, especially if they qualify for the next Champions League, but if an offer of €60m comes in they will ‘hardly be able to say no’.

In the background, there is Bayern Munich. For the moment the Bavarians have not given any indications about possibly using their buy-back clause, which stands at €40m.

If they do not exercise it, the Germans would instead get a percentage of 40% of the amount that exceeds the €8m paid by Bologna for him.

So if Zirkzee were sold for €50m, €16.8m would go to the Bavarians with a simple calculation: €8m are subtracted from the amount offered, leaving €42m, from which 40% must be subtracted.
