GdS: Analysing the referee’s calls in Fiorentina vs. Milan – an invented penalty

Marco Di Bello officiated AC Milan’s defeat against Fiorentina last night and while he got most of the decisions right, there were a few dubious ones. In fact, he was rescued from a sensational error in the second half.

Milan failed to make it 5/5 wins ahead of the Tottenham return and will need to bounce back in every aspect for that game. Certainly, they cannot blame the referee for yesterday’s defeat even if Di Bello made a couple of strange calls.

As analysed by Gazzetta Dello Sport (via SempreMilan), it was harsh by Di Bello to give Junior Messias a yellow card for the come-together with Cristiano Biraghi as he got the ball first. The rest was a mere consequence of the Fiorentina player’s lunge.

In the second half, Di Bello almost made a sensational error as he ‘invented’ a penalty in favour of Milan. Arthur Cabral cleared the ball with his head but the referee was thrown off by his high arm, pointing to the spot. Fortunately, VAR stepped in and made sure he revised the clearly incorrect decision.
