Simone Inzaghi and Sergio Conceicao are no strangers, they won the Scudetto together with Lazio in 2000, but their last meeting ended frostily.

Now, the coaches of two of Italy’s biggest clubs, perhaps the biggest two, Inzaghi and Conceicao will meet again on Monday night, but the relationship between the two of them will be closely watched.

Of course, there will be respect, as there always is, but there will also be a sign of friendship there, with the duo formerly teammates. However, there will also be an eye on the pair, given the outcome of their last meeting which ended in a strange way.

As Gazzetta dello Sport recalls, two years ago in the Champions League, Conceicao’s Porto met Inzaghi’s Inter. The Nerazzurri were leading in the dying seconds, but things could have ended much differently. Conceicao was forced to rue two missed chances, one from Mehdi Taremi and the other from Marko Grujic.

Two chances which both hit the crossbar, either would have sent the game to extra time.

Following the final whistle, Inzaghi approached to shake his opponent’s hand, but his former teammate avoided the gesture, an understandable reaction given the events on the pitch. Instead of frustration though, the Italian offered some words of understanding.

Since then, the pair have not met, but neither holds a grudge or hostility, as Conceicao stated in his press conference earlier today.
