Millwall manager Gary Rowett has admitted that he believes that Duncan Watmore possesses the quality to reach double figures in terms of goals between now and the end of the campaign.

The Lions opted to bolster their attacking options in the previous transfer window by swooping for Watmore who sealed a permanent move to the club from Middlesbrough.

After making his debut for Millwall in their clash with Sunderland earlier this month, the 28-year-old helped his side secure all three points in last weekend’s meeting with Queens Park Rangers by scoring at Loftus Road.

Watmore gave the Lions the lead in the 31st minute of this fixture as he fired an effort past goalkeeper Seny Dieng after being teed up by Zian Flemming.

Following the break, Millwall doubled their advantage via a strike from Oliver Burke before QPR pulled a goal back in the closing stages.

The Lions withstood some late pressure from the R’s to seal victory.

Millwall will now be looking to back up this triumph by picking up a positive result in their clash with Coventry City tomorrow.

Ahead of this fixture, Rowett has made an honest claim about Watmore.

Speaking to Southwark News, the Millwall boss said: “If you look at it, I think he scored five goals for Middlesbrough up until this point of the season, so he’s scored six now.

“Again, you look at the games to go, if he was to get to double figures, I think we’ve had one wide player in the last three or four years that has gotten into that.

“That was probably about three years ago with Jed [Wallace].

“It’s not easy to do, but he’s certainly shown that he’s got that capability.

“What I like about Duncan is that he’ll work the other way as well, he’ll chase, he’ll run, he’ll compete, and he’s exactly our kind of player.”

The Verdict

Having taken his overall goal tally for the season to six last weekend, it would not be at all surprising if Watmore matches, or even exceeds the target set by Rowett.

Before making the move to The Den, the winger also provided two assists in a Middlesbrough shirt at this level earlier this season.

Watmore knows exactly what it takes to compete in this division as he has made 100 Championship appearances during his career.

By using the experience that he has gained over the years to his advantage, the former Sunderland man could potentially play a key role in Millwall’s push for a play-off place.
