A number of ex-players are pushing for the Government to establish an independent football regulator, with Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Gary Lineker and Rio Ferdinand coming together to sign an open letter.

In theory the regulator would outlaw any future attempts to disrupt the football pyramid and help draw a line in the sand after the horrific attempts to form a European Super League.

The Government is now under a pressure to act after doing a lot of talking about football ownership in recent weeks. It’s become a matter, like many, when actions are louder than words.

Ourselves included in this; we would like the Government to help stop future attempts from clubs to abandon the tradition football pyramid and provides fans with the opportunity to sign a petition backing calls to introduce an overarching regulatory body, as per the Daily Mail.

The duty will be to represent the interests of supporters, protect against bad practicises and adjudicate on matters involving the FA, Premier League and EFL. Other key issues include wealth distribution, stringent fit and proper persons tests for prospect club owners and equality, diversity and inclusion.

Also worth noting is how the Government are launching a separate fan-led review into football governance, fronted by politician Tracey Crouch.
