Tottenham defender Cristian Romero was lucky to stay on the pitch as his side beat Newcastle, according to Gary Neville.

With Spurs four goals up on the Magpies as the final ten minutes began on Sunday, the Argentine launched into a rash challenge on Callum Wilson which earned him a yellow card.

VAR confirmed the decision of referee Chris Kavanagh despite Wilson being left in a heap by Romero, who was perhaps fortunate to escape a booking for a late challenge on Miguel Almiron in the first half.

Sky Sports co-commentator Gary Neville was left flabbergasted by Romero escaping what would have been his second red card of the season.

"Absolutely mad," the former Manchester United defender said during commentary.

"Honestly, I think it's a red card at first look. He's crazy, Romero.

"I said in the first half, he always has to tackle... jockeying, slowing himself down doesn't come into his head.

"That's a red, I'm sorry. I've got very little sympathy for him because he does it that often.

"[Wilson] is on the floor, he's defenceless. [Romero]'s just gone straight over the ball onto his ankle."

Tottenham nonetheless earned a valuable win over Newcastle in north London, Richarlison scoring twice after Destiny Udogie's first goal for the club.
