Legendary England striker Gary Lineker has insisted that Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay is the kind of player Manchester United and Ruben Amorim could do with at the moment.
United have endured a difficult campaign as the squad struggles to get fully acclimated to the demands of Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 system.
The Red Devils suffered a 15th defeat of the season on Sunday afternoon, as Wolverhampton Wanderers beat them 1-0 at Old Trafford – a result that left Amorim’s men languishing in 14th place in the table with just five games left to play.
United are bracing for a crucial summer window, with the hierarchy eager to sign players who are more suited to how Amorim wants to play and Lineker has suggested the club should perhaps have a look at one of their former stars – McTominay.
McTominay left United last summer for Napoli in a deal worth £25m. He has slotted seamlessly into life in Naples and has been a key part of their push for a Serie A title.
Napoli sit second in the league, level on points with Inter Milan, who hold the top spot on goal difference.
McTominay has plundered nine goals and two assists in 29 Serie A appearances. He has scored 10 goals across all competitions.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker suggested that McTominay could be the man to solve United’s woes in the middle of the park.
Lineker said, “Scott McTominay scored two more goals, one of them a beauty, for Napoli at the beginning of the week.”
“It’s remarkable how well some of the [former] United players are doing. McTominay is exactly the player, I would say, that would work in an Amorim system.”
“He’s what they need. And I know they were forced to sell him because of this PSR and he’s a local lad, which we all think is a nonsensical and a ridiculous feature of this particular rule.”
United are unlikely to move for McTominay but they’re expected to bring in a midfielder. The 20-time English champions continue to be linked to the likes of Xavi Simons (RB Leipzig), Jobe Bellingham (Sunderland), Ederson (Atalanta) and Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), just to mention a few names.
