Gareth Southgate insists he will “100%” continue to pick Jordan Henderson for England despite growing opposition.

Henderson was openly booed by national team supporters during their friendly win over Australia after joining Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq.

His switch has been heavily criticised by the public due to Saudi Arabia’s stance regarding LGBTQ+ rights. The former Liverpool ace was a known advocate for the community.

In Monday’s press conference, Southgate remained adamant the midfielder still has his backing for the Three Lions ahead of their Euro 2024 qualifier with Italy at Wembley.

“I select the players I think are the best players to represent the team and give us the best chance of winning, unless we think something isn’t appropriate,” said Southgate.

“People might disagree with Jordan’s stance and decision but I don’t think it’s a reason to not select him. I don’t think it’s a reason to boo him.

“We’d like all the fans behind us. We’re a stronger team with the fans behind us. If it was a popularity contest our team would look very different.

“I will assess how people are playing and what’s our strongest squad. It wouldn’t be fair to say I’d select them regardless.

“If better young players come through… But I’m still going to defend our players, our team. We need that unity.”

Kyle Walker also offered his support to Henderson, who ended a 12-year stay with Liverpool to sign for Al-Ettifaq this summer.

He said: “It’s not nice to hear [the booing].

“I’ve known him since the age of nine. To see what he’s done for the country over a number of years.

“He’s a big part of the togetherness of the group. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

“I fully back Jordan, his decision and what’s he had to do.”

England can secure qualification for next year’s finals with a win over the reigning European champions in Tuesday’s Group C encounter.
