Gareth Southgate has revealed that his family played a key role in his decision to stay on as England manager following World Cup heartache in Qatar.

The Three Lions were one of the favourites to win the World Cup in 2022 but were knocked out by eventual finalists France in the quarter finals thanks to a late goal from Olivier Giroud and a penalty miss from Harry Kane.

Southgate eventually decided to stay on as the Three Lions manager and now, in an interview with ITV, he's explained his thought process: “They [his family] left Doha saying you’ve got to give this one more go and try to get this trophy.

“I’m in a job with the chance to make some history and I have the privilege of leading the national team. “It’s been an unbelievable experience. I think we’ve made progress with the team across the years we’ve been in charge and I’m determined to try to drive the team that next step.

“We’re in a different landscape to any previous England team because of the success we’ve had. In our own minds, winning is probably the only thing that’s going to fulfil us.”
