Gareth Southgate gives update on Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane after injury scare in England win vs Iran

England manager Gareth Southgate has given a positive injury update on Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane after his team’s 6-2 drubbing of Iran in their opening game of the 2022 FIFA World Cup group stage.

The Spurs star assisted twice in the match – first to Raheem Sterling in the first minute of first-half stoppage time and then to Marcus Rashford in the 71st minute. However, he could not get on the scoresheet.

Kane went down after a challenge from an Iranian defender in the 48th minute but then got back up shortly. He was taken off with 15 minutes left on the clock and was spotted with protective gear around his ankle after the full-time whistle.

This would naturally raise alarm bells for England and Spurs fans. But the ex-Middlesbrough boss stated in his post-match interview (h/t Sky Sports):

No reason to worry

Southgate seems relaxed about Kane’s situation and the 29-year-old walked off the pitch without any discomfort when he was being substituted. It doesn’t seem like anything serious.

There’s no hiding the fact that Spurs fans who don’t hail from England would be closely following the Three Lions’ progress and wishing that they do well. Kane, after all, is their main man.

England will play against the United States of America on 25 November, and then against Wales four days later. Kane winning the Golden Boot once again would be iconic – but with just a maximum of seven total games, drawing a blank in the first match won’t help his cause.
