With injuries mounting ahead of Euro 2020, Gareth Southgate is reportedly considering playing Luke Shaw out of position as he continues to search for alternatives to Harry Maguire. It was revealed yesterday that despite stepping up his recovery, the United skipper will not be ready to take the field in the opening group game.

Shaw is familiar with the position, having playing there under Ole Gunnar Solskjær on numerous occasions, but prefers a role on the wing. The 25-year-old will be eager to impress on international duty after three years out of the squad.

According to the Telegraph, the England manager is giving the decision careful consideration ahead of Sunday’s curtain raiser. A 3-4-3 system is believed to have been trialled, as well as various four-at-the-back formations.

Ben Chilwell, who had been sweating on his place at left-back prior to the news, is likely to play as the left sided wing-back should Shaw be deployed in a more central role.

Shaw has just made ten appearances for his nation since his debut in 2014 but will be hoping to cement a place in Southgate’s side after the tournament, after a breakthrough season at Manchester United.
