Gareth Bale has been linked with a summer transfer to MLS club DC United – it is a move that would make perfect sense.

The 32-year-old will depart Real Madrid at the end of the season when his contract with the La Liga outfit expires.

Joining another Spanish club appeared to be Bale’s most likely option, but the Washington Post’s Steven Goff says a Stateside switch could be on the cards.

The reporter has claimed the forward is in negotiations with the American side outfit about a potential move to Audi Field.

Goff posted on his official Twitter page: “DC United in talks with Gareth Bale’s reps about a move to MLS, I’m told.

“They actually spoke months ago but didn’t go anywhere. Sides exchanging proposals but unclear whether It will pick up speed.

“DCU prepared to pay more than Wayne Rooney in 2018. Bale leaving Real Madrid.

“Certainly seems very far-fetched but maybe some hope for DCU, given talks have resumed after a long pause.

“Team has been seeking a third DP to join [Edison] Flores and [Taxiarchis] Fountas. We’ll see.”

Gareth Bale would be a hit in the MLS

While Goff’s comment that a move to the US for Bale seems ‘far-fetched’, it would be no surprise to see him end up in MLS.

Despite winning plenty of silverware with Madrid, it is impossible to say his move to the La Liga giants has been successful.

He has come in from plenty of criticism in recent years, with fans and pro-Madrid media unhappy with his apparent indifference towards the club.

His stunning performance in the 2017/18 Champions League final demonstrated his talent, but similar moments have been few and far between since then.

The Madrid faithful will undoubtedly consider Bale an underachiever, and it is difficult to argue with that assessment.

The calmer waters of the MLS could reignite Bale’s enthusiasm for club football and allow him to showcase his ability more regularly.
