It’s been a depressing season if you’re a Real Madrid fan.
Zinedine Zidane’s unexpected exit, Cristiano Ronaldo’s shock departure, defeat after defeat with Julen Lopetegui and now a stuttering side under Santiago Solari.
But oh how things could have been different if this report in AS is to be believed.
They claim that Los Blancos had the chance to sell Gareth Bale to Manchester United two summers ago and were all set to replace the Welshman with Kylian Mbappé.
Ultimately though, president Florentino Pérez got cold feet over the deal to let Bale go and as such Mbappé’s father warned his son against the competition at Santiago Bernabèu.
It meant that PSG could swoop in at the last minute and match Real Madrid’s €180m offer – and ended up signing the teenage sensation.
Madrid have since seen Bale spend more time in the physio’s room than on the pitch, have let Ronaldo go to Juventus and have tried to make up for missing out on Mbappé by signing Mariano Díaz and Vinícius Júnior.
Once again – it’s depressing being a Real Madrid fan at the moment.
