Manchester City could yet offload three of their first-team stars to Galatasaray this summer, according to maintained reporting from Turkey.
This latest development adds to what has been a recurring storyline throughout the transfer window, with Manchester City’s senior squad facing a number of unresolved situations, despite the season now underway.
Ederson has attracted strong interest for two years, while Manuel Akanji’s valuation being met has left the defender debating his own future at the Etihad Stadium. Ilkay Gundogan, meanwhile, has been heavily discussed in both German and English media, with reports describing him as “one to watch” before the window closes.
For City, the possibility of losing all three would represent a significant shake-up to Pep Guardiola’s plans. Ederson has been first-choice goalkeeper for eight seasons, Gundogan remains one of the club’s most decorated midfielders, while Akanji has been a strong defensive presence across the past three campaigns.
The emergence of Galatasaray as a club retaining optimism of signing all three underlines the sense of uncertainty that still surrounds parts of City’s squad. It is also consistent with a wider theme of this summer’s transfer market at the Etihad Stadium: high-profile players being courted late in the window.
Manchester City have already sanctioned exits for academy names such as Callum Doyle and Claudio Echeverri, while more senior figures such as Jack Grealish and James McAtee have found new solutions to benefit their own careers.
Now, according to the information of Turkish media outlet Sabah – as translated and relayed by Sport Witness – Galatasaray still have plans to sign all three of Manchester City’s Ederson, Manuel Akanji, and Ilkay Gundogan this summer.
On Ederson, the Brazilian is said to remain as the Turkish side’s primary target to replace the departed Fernando Muslera, with agents Ahmet Bulut and Özgün Koyutürk aiming to broker a deal this summer.
Galatasaray are further said to be monitoring Manuel Akanji’s situation, while Ilkay Gundogan remains on their radar having gained confidence earlier in the summer that a deal could be possible for the German.
Whether or not Galatasaray can realistically land all three remains to be seen, but their persistence suggests at least one deal could progress before the deadline. Ederson has long been viewed as the most attainable, particularly given City’s now-parallel interest in PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma as a replacement.
For Gundogan, a move would depend heavily on whether he is ready to call time on his decorated City spell. Despite seeing his initial 12-month deal automatically extended earlier this summer, reports have cast doubt on whether he will see it out. Meanwhile, Akanji’s situation may hinge on how Guardiola intends to balance his defensive options.
With just days left until the window closes, Galatasaray’s ambitions keep City at the centre of one of Europe’s most intriguing late transfer sagas. Fans of the Premier League giants may yet be preparing for an emotional farewell to one – or more – of their treble-winning icons.
