The outrage over Gabriel Martinelli’s red card for Arsenal against Wolves on Thursday rumbles on.
The Arsenal striker was bizarrely shown two yellow cards in the same passage of play, resulting in referee Michael Oliver sending him off.
First, the Brazilian attempted to prevent Daniel Podence from taking a quick throw-in. A clear bookable offence despite the fact he was unable to stop the throw.
Then, as he chased back, he fouled Chiquinho – again, another clear bookable offence.
Oliver gave the free kick and showed Martinelli two yellow cards. He pointed back to where the offence took place regarding the throw-in and then pointed to the foul he had just made.
Would Martinelli have made that foul if he knew he was technically already on a yellow card?
It’s an argument that has raged on despite Arsenal holding out for a 1-0 victory thanks to Gabriel’s goal.
The rules state Oliver made the correct decision, the fact that we’ve seldom seen an incident like this has led to an almighty debate.
But while many supporters may not have seen an incident like this before, the referee has.
In fact, during Brighton vs Bournemouth in January 2018 in which Oliver was in charge, the exact same thing happened. However, there was a different outcome.
Davy Propper was the culprit as he hauled down one opponent before fouling another. There could be very little argument that both offences deserved a yellow card.
However, Oliver only showed Propper one yellow card.
Interesting…
What we want to know is how the Arsenal fan in question has found that footage. Perhaps a career in investigative journalism beckons…
