Gabriel Martinelli picked up one of the craziest red cards of the season for Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday evening.
The Gunners took the lead in the first half through Gabriel.
But Mikel Arteta’s side were reduced to 10-men in the 69th minute when Martinelli was given a bizarre red card.
The Brazilian managed to pick up two bookings at once and was sent off.
Martinelli, who was clearly frustrated after losing the ball, pushed Daniel Podence over as the Portuguese tried to take a quick throw-in.
The youngster then sprinted back and fouled Nelson Semedo to put a halt to Wolves’ counter attack.
Michael Oliver decided to give him two yellow cards at once and Martinelli was ordered to make his way back to the dressing room. Watch the moment below…
Dan Critchlow (@afcDW), Senior writer for the Daily Cannon, summed up the red card perfectly, saying: “Another red-card incident I’ve only ever seen happen to Arsenal.”
And Dan is right. It’s very, very rare that you see a player being booked twice at the same time.
Arsenal have now been given 101 red cards since the Premier League was formed, the most of any team.
They have also been given more red cards (four) than they’ve scored goals (two) in 2022.
Fortunately for Arsenal, Martinelli’s sending off didn’t prove costly as they held on to a valuable three points.
Arsenal have leapfrogged Manchester United into fifth place having picked up 39 points from their 23 Premier League games.
They are just one point behind West Ham in fourth and have two games in hand over David Moyes’ side.
The Gunners have a great chance of qualifying for the Champions League once again, a competition they haven’t played in since 2017.
Wolves, meanwhile, are five points worse off than Arsenal in eighth. Their chances of qualifying for Europe have taken a dent but are still very much alive.
