Garth Crooks revealed his Team of the Week following the conclusion of the most recent round of fixtures, and Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhaes made an appearance in the side.

It probably won’t be a surprise to anyone to hear that this is Arsenal’s first participant in the BBC Team of the Week since the start of the season.

No one was really outstanding in the win over Norwich City, and the three poor defeats before that were always unlikely to see anyone up for inclusion.

But Arsenal defended their clean sheet well at the weekend, and Gabriel was at the heart of that. He reached double figures for clearances, and he covered for his teammates’ mistakes on a couple of occasions.

Crooks wrote: “Boy, do Arsenal need Gabriel in their team. The hug that took place between Aaron Ramsdale and Gabriel at the end of the game said just how much a second clean sheet in consecutive games meant to Arsenal’s defensive unit.”

Mikel Arteta has already been singing the praises of the Arsenal centre-back for the performance, and for the bright future ahead of him.

“We know that he’s a player with an incredible future and is already giving us a lot,” Arteta said. “He has adapted really well to the league. That’s why we signed him.

“He is stepping in, his language is much better and he can coach and communicate much better with his teammates.

“He understands what we want and I don’t think it gets much harder than playing here in the Premier League. He was terrific today.”
