AC Milan defender Matteo Gabbia has revealed that he has developed a good feeling alongside Pierre Kalulu as a makeshift centre-back pairing.

Gabbia has been thrust into the limelight of late because of the defensive crisis that head coach Stefano Pioli has had to battle. Milan are missing a number of players again as Fikayo Tomori and Simon Kjaer are both out with knee injuries, Alessio Romagnoli is not back as he has only just tested negative for Covid-19, Sandro Tonali is suspended while Franck Kessie and Ismael Bennacer are at AFCON.

Before the game against Spezia at San Siro, Gabbia spoke to Milan TV about how he and his team-mates are feeling at the moment and how he has found it working alongside Kalulu, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“We had a lot of commitments and we want to do well today too. We hope to win today too,” he said.

“I feel good with him [Kalulu], we are trying to get to know each other more and more. We have prepared ourselves as best we can for today’s match.”

The 22-year-old has stepped up competently so far in the wins over Roma and Venezia in the league, but every game is a new challenge.

Gabbia also spoke to DAZN: “There are external things for the transfer market. In every game we must deserve to play the next game. The lack of Tonali is important for us, but there will be players who will be able to replace him in the best possible way.”
