AC Milan were deservedly beaten by Bologna on Wednesday evening in the final of the Coppa Italia and Matteo Gabbia summarised the game and season.

In many ways this game followed the trend of the year. Something positive followed by a very stark reminder. Milan, in recent weeks, have been on a great run, but when it mattered, they fell apart and offered little of their best selves.

Nothing can be taken away from Bologna, who seemingly wanted it more than the Rossonerithe team which were passengers for the majority of the game. However, frustartions are rife, and they are directed everywhere.

To his credit, Gabbia is displaying captain-like qualities by facing the press and the fans this evening by taking an interview, and after full-time he spoke to SportMediaset about the game, and its wider meaning for the Diavolo’s season, as relayed by Milan News.

The feeling is that Milan has done too little…

“Yes, we are disappointed with how the game went. It is difficult to find the right words. There is a lot of disappointment, regret, it is a season that has been negative for us. It was a bad evening that could have been good if we had managed to do better.”

Two games to hope for Europe…

“There’s little energy at the moment, we put what we had on the pitch but it wasn’t enough. We have two games to close with dignity and pride. Then once the season is over we’ll take stock, it’s undeniable today. You can’t say it’s a positive season.”

Difficulties on the way out…

“We know that Bologna puts a lot of pressure on each player, it’s not just us that are making things difficult, but it’s also put the best teams in difficulty. We could and should have done better. In these cases, you also need to have the strength to say well done to the others.”

Beukema’s elbow in the first half…

“I don’t want to comment, it’s superfluous. There’s little to add. I think it’s clear enough, but it doesn’t change anything at this moment. We should have thought better about the technical things on the pitch.

“It doesn’t change the fact that we should have done better and that this evening it was a disappointment not to return to Milan with a cup.”

The defender also spoke to Milan News.

Disappointment in the locker room.

“It’s difficult to speak clearly. The dressing room is very disappointed and that’s normal. There’s a lot of regret, there’s the awareness of having thrown away an opportunity. We can only lick our wounds now, not let ourselves go as a group in the last matches. We found some difficulties in the match, we could have done better. Congratulations to Bologna.”

What didn’t work?

“We weren’t able to create much and it’s the team’s responsibility, everyone’s. We need to accept what happened and work better: they seem like clichés, but they’re the only things you can think and say on a night like this.”

Did Conceicao say something?

“There is a lot of regret, the climate is not as good as it normally is. We haven’t talked about anything and this is not the time to do so.”

Symbolic match of the season… What was missing?

“It’s difficult to answer this question. The truth is that we probably weren’t able to give our best for the level we have in the team. Bad season, we had to do more and we will try to do more in the future. Commitment and dedication will not be lacking.

“We are so bitter. For everything. For the fans, for the staff, for everyone. Not giving them joy will make us feel bad.”

Was there a lack of a director today, someone to rely on?

“We must not rely on someone to whom we give the ball and who solves our problems, it is a team game. We must take responsibility as a team.”
