Matteo Gabbia put pen to paper on his awaited Milan renewal until 2029 on Thursday night. The defender has arguably been the Rossoneri’s most reliable man in the back so far, confirming his importance under Paulo Fonseca after Stefano Pioli relied heavily on him in the second half of last season. He has appeared eight times, missing multiple matches due to a calf strain.
The center-back is a club product and only spent time away from his boyhood team on loan, first at Lucchese in 2018 to cut his teeth and more recently at Villarreal last year. He was hastily recalled in January because of several absences at the position. He has accumulated 84 caps, scoring 5 goals. The 25-year-old recently earned his maiden Italy call-up, although he didn’t debut.
Gabbia dished on his long-term extension to Milan TV (via Tuttomercatoweb).
“I’m surely delighted. It’s a very nice moment for me. It’s a dream come true and the prosecution of a story that started years ago. At this time, I feel important to the team and loved by everybody at the Milanello training center and the HQ. I’m truly happy and hope it could be the start of something even better in years to come. On a personal level, my goal is to keep earning the trust of this side, which deserves constant effort, dedication, and sacrifice.”
According to Sky, Gabbia nearly doubled his wages as he re-upped with Milan. He will make €1.8M net plus add-ons in the next few years.
