Former Atlético Madrid man Diego has urged Flamengo to help future Real Madrid player Vinícius Júnior, who he believes keeps “making mistakes”.
The striker is set to join Los Blancos in June 2018 for a fee in the region of €45m, and has recently faced criticism in Brazil for his inflammatory goal celebration against Botafogo.
The teenager faced the ire of Glorioso fans, when he mocked tears after scoring against them earlier this year – a reference to Botafogo players crying following a Rio State Championship match almost a decade ago.
And the ex-Atléti man, who is now a teammate of the 18-year-old, has insisted the club need to keep an eye out for their young star.
“He is going through an important stage in his career and it is not always easy,” Diego is cited as saying by Diario AS.
“Vinicius is strong and he has his head in the right place but we must all understand he is making mistakes, but this is natural and we must help him.
“He is receiving a lot of attention which makes things difficult but his style of play – his skill, his daring, his flair – only adds to this, and he did not bring it upon himself.
“Sometimes we expect too much of him, at such a young age, and we must not become frustrated when he does not meet these heightened expectations constantly.”
