Sergio Reguilon’s future is ‘out of Tottenham Hotspur’s hands’ after the left-back has been linked with a return to former employers Real Madrid, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Reguilon joined the north Londoners for a fee which could rise to £32million 18 months ago, but it appears a move back to the Bernabeu could be in the offing in the months ahead.

What’s the latest news involving Reguilon?

According to the Mirror, via the Express, Real Madrid are interested in welcoming Reguilon back to the Spanish capital and Spurs can do nothing to stop a switch going ahead.

The report suggests the La Liga title chasers are keen to trigger their option to buy the 25-year-old back for £33.6million, but the clause expires on May 30.

Spanish media outlet El Nacional have claimed head coach Carlo Ancelotti has tasked Real Madrid president Florentino Perez with securing Reguilon’s services and the full-back is keen to return to his home city.

Perez also views the decision to allow Reguilon to head to the Premier League as a mistake and has not hesitated in following Ancelotti’s instructions.

Reguilon has made 60 appearances since joining Spurs, while he previously featured 22 times for Real Madrid.

What has Pete O’Rourke said about Reguilon?

O’Rourke admits that Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte is powerless if Real Madrid meet the buyback clause written into Reguilon’s contract.

The journalist understands Marcelo’s impending departure from the Bernabeu is a key reason for the Spanish club looking to recapture the Spurs ace.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “This one’s pretty much out of Spurs’ hands because of the clause in his contract that Real Madrid can buy him back for a certain fee.

“If Real Madrid meet that, they can bring Sergio Reguilon back to the Bernabeu. They might be in the market for a left-back come this summer, with Marcelo likely to leave the club after his long stint in the Spanish capital.”

Would Reguilon’s departure be a big blow for Conte?

Reguilon has continued to feature heavily since Conte’s November appointment as Nuno Espirito Santo’s successor in the Tottenham dugout.

The six-cap Spain international has failed to appear in just two of Spurs’ Premier League fixtures under the new regime and they have ended in 2-0 defeats to Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Were Reguilon to seal his exit, Conte would be left to contend with Ben Davies and Ryan Sessegnon as his left wing-back options.

As a result, the Italian would almost certainly dip into the transfer market to seek a long-term replacement for Reguilon.
