Eintracht host VfL Wolfsburg at Deutsche Bank Park on Saturday, with the aim of maintaining their momentum in the league.

Three days after losing 3-0 to Sporting Clube de Portugal in their UEFA Champions League opener, Eintracht Frankfurt switch their attention back to the Bundesliga. On Saturday at 15:30 CEST, they entertain Wolfsburg at Deutsche Bank Park on Matchday 6.

Under new coach Niko Kovac, the winless Wolves are currently 17th in the table on two points. As well as Kovac, who was in charge of Eintracht for a total of 91 competitive matches, several new players arrived at Wolfsburg during the last transfer window, including midfielders Mattias Svanberg (Bologna) and Bartol Franjic (Dinamo Zagreb), wingers Jakub Kaminski (Lech Poznan) and the injured Patrick Wimmer (Arminia Bielefeld) and right-back Kilian Fischer (1. FC Nürnberg). The club also lost some important players, though, in Xaver Schlager (Leipzig), Kevin Mbabu (Fulham) and John Anthony Brooks (Benfica).

Awkward opponents

In any case, board member for sport Markus Krösche and the rest of the Eintracht management are expecting “a really tough, nasty game”. The stats back that up: VfL lead the ‘intensive runs’ category after the first five matchdays (3,789), with Borussia Dortmund (3,614) and Frankfurt (3,554) behind. The bottom line, however, is that they’ve conceded 10 goals and only scored four themselves – with three of those coming from Germany striker Lukas Nmecha.

When the Wolves meet the Eagles, they generally find the net. Since a 2-0 loss in December 2012, the Green-and-Whites have scored at least one goal in every Bundesliga match against Eintracht, as was the case when they won 2-0 in Frankfurt in the last meeting between the two sides. It’s time to end that run!
