Fulham are still hoping to tie Fabio Carvalho down to a new contract, despite links to Premier League clubs.

According to the Evening Standard, the Cottagers are attempting to tie the playmaker down to a new deal with the club.

Carvalho has rejected a new contract already, with his current one set to expire at the end of the season.

That would make him a free agent this Summer, with the likes of West Ham, Southampton and Liverpool all expressing interest in the player.

Carvalho has bagged eight goals and earned two assists from 17 Championship appearances for Marco Silva’s side this season.

Silva is said to be desperate to keep Carvalho at the club, as he has become an integral part of their promotion challenge.

However, with the player’s future in his own hands there is very little the club can do to persuade him to stay when there are clubs like West Ham and Liverpool chasing his signature.

Calum Chambers

Yes No

The Portuguese born player made his debut for Fulham in September 2020 in a 2-0 Carabao Cup victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

Fulham are currently top of the Championship table, with 57 points from 27 games. Silva’s side are on a four game winning run that has seen them score 22 goals and concede six.

There is a five point gap to second place Blackburn Rovers below them in the table, with third place Bournemouth now eight points adrift.

Up next for Fulham is the visit of Blackpool to Craven Cottage on January 29.

The Verdict

The club have to do everything in their power to try to persuade Carvalho to sign a new contract.

Even if it meant adding a release clause into the new deal so that Carvalho can still get his move eventually, Fulham should be doing what they can to avoid eating the financial loss of letting him go on a free this Summer.

Carvalho has been a crucial player for the side, one they brought through and gave their professional debut to, so to lose him on a free would particularly sting.

Carvalho’s potential also means that Fulham likely could’ve negotiated a hefty transfer fee if they had secured him to a long-term contract, so Fulham will need to learn the lessons of their mistakes during this saga to avoid this situation happening again.
