Fulham appear to be adamant on signing Scott McTominay from Manchester United this summer in a desperate attempt to rebuild their depleted midfield.

Since links with West Ham United emerged last season, the media has been abuzz with rumours about McTominay’s potential departure from United.

West Ham’s £30 million bid last year was rejected by the Red Devils as the offer did not match their valuation.

Last week, it was reported that Fulham had placed an initial £17 million bid which was promptly rejected by the Old Trafford side. But the Cottagers are reportedly planning to come back with an improved offer for the Scottish international.

On Saturday, reports emerged of McTominay’s desire to remain at Old Trafford with Erik ten Hag confirming his desire to see McTominay grow at United.

“We have very good players so there will always be an interest from other clubs. When you score 10 goals in a season and also perform very good for Scotland, then there will be an interest.

“But we want to keep him because he is a very important player for our squad,” Ten Hag said.

Still, despite the manager’s view, if Fulham do come up with a huge bid, there is a possibility that McTominay could depart the club this summer.

According to Sky Sports, “Fulham remain very interested in him. They made a bid of around £17 million earlier on in this transfer window that was rejected by Manchester United.

“United now are basically expecting Fulham to come back in with an improved offer,” Sky Sports‘ Dharmesh Sheth commented.

Although McTominay has been included in United’s squad for their upcoming pre-season tour of the US, the club has not ruled out his potential departure this summer.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed to CaughtOffside this morning that United remain open to allowing McTominay to depart for the right price.

“Fulham have also been linked with Scott McTominay and reports of their interest is accurate, though nothing is close or advanced at this stage,” Romano explained.

“For Manchester United it’s been a very clear position since last summer: in case of a good, important proposal McTominay can leave. Otherwise they would be more than happy to keep McTominay at the club.”

Given that Fulham’s key player Joao Palhinha departed for Bayern Munich while former transfer target Pierre-Emile Højbjerg signed for Marseille, the need to sign a capable midfield enforcer is stronger than ever.

This means that McTominay’s departure this summer cannot be ruled out, no matter how much Ten Hag praises the 27-year-old.
