Chelsea are making great progress in the transfer market this summer, with even the tricky issue of Joao Felix looking to have been solved by a miracle bid from Saudi Arabia.

There is still one big money problem hanging over the sporting directors though – getting rid of Raheem Sterling and his huge wages. On Football Insider this week, Stefan Borson claimed to have inside information about one potential solution.

Sterling effectively “free transfer” says football finance expert

Raheem Sterling arrives for Man City game

“The reality is Raheem Sterling is a free transfer-fee wise. The only question is how much of the salary is being paid by the new club,” Borson said.

“He’s on something like £350,00 a week apparently, and I think he’s still got two years left and he’s 31 in December. He’s not played well for two years broadly.

“He’s not a very attractive signing for somebody, aside from the fact that he has a history in the game and, prior to leaving City, he was considered a top player.

“I have heard Fulham are interested, but Fulham are going to be interested on the basis that we get close to the end of the window and they can take him on some kind of creative deal where maybe they pay a £5million loan fee and half his wages or something. It will be something of that order.”

Chelsea can still make the best of a bad situation

It’s hard to know exactly how accurate that all is, but it certainly lines up with what we would assume about this whole situation. Like with Kepa Arrizabalaga and Romelu Lukaku before him, it will be all about just gritting out teeth and finding the best offer to take us much as the winger’s wages off our hands as we can, while waiting for this dreadful contract to expire.

To sell him now, even effectively for free, and remove ourselves from having to go through this nightmare all over again.
