Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool failed to clinch all three points against Fulham in their 2022/23 Premier League opener on Saturday afternoon.

Klopp’s side went into the game against the newly-promoted side as the heavy favourites.

But they were second best in the first-half and were 1-0 down at the break courtesy of Aleksandar Mitrović’s opener.

The Reds improved after the break, largely thanks to Darwin Nunez’s introduction.

The Uruguayan levelled proceedings as he marked his Premier League debut with a goal.

Mitrovic made it 2-1 as he won and then converted a penalty, but Mohamed Salah’s late equaliser ensured the two sides shared the spoils.

Klopp has made a habit of making excuses whenever his side lose in the past few years.

And he was at it again in his post-match interview with BT Sport.

The German manager was not overly happy with the ‘dry’ pitch, which didn’t make it easy for his side.

He said, per Eurosport: “We got a point from a really bad game from my side so now it’s a question of ‘How can that happen?’

“The attitude was not right in the beginning and then we wanted to fight back but it wasn’t easy any more.“The pitch was dry, stuff like this. Really difficult.”

While Klopp wasn’t happy with the pitch, he also wasn’t very complimentary of his side and admitted they did not deserve to win.

He said, per The Mirror: “The result is fine, we don’t deserve more than that but the performance is massively improvable.”

Asked about his half-time team-talk, he said: “You can’t always hug the boys.

“We do that usually when they deserve it and the first half – it’s not that they didn’t but when you start a game the opposite of how we want to start it’s difficult.

“Everybody was under pressure, we couldn’t really break the lines. We never had momentum, we could have won the game as we had the bigger chances but that would have been too much.”
