Here is all the Liverpool news from Tuesday 16 July, with major updates on Fenway Sports Group's attempt to buy Bordeaux and Virgil van Dijk's future.

FSG WILL NOT BUY FRENCH CLUB BORDEAUX

Girondins de Bordeaux have announced that FSG will not purchase the club despite talks progressing far last week.

The French club made those talks public as it appeared the American investment group were on the verge of completing a takeover. But things have collapsed with Bordeaux claiming it has come about because of fees over the stadium and the uncertain finances in French football.

TV deals - or lack thereof - risk the futures of several Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 clubs. Bordeaux aren’t even one of those - their own disastrous finances saw them relegated to the third tier for next season.

A Bordeaux statement read: "FC Girondins de Bordeaux and its shareholder have been informed by Fenway Sports Group of its desire not to pursue discussions initiated in recent weeks with a view to purchasing the club.

"This decision is explained in particular by the significant cost of the stadium in the years to come, but also by the general economic context of French football.

"FC Girondins de Bordeaux and Gérard Lopez thank Fenway Sports Group for the interest shown in the club as well as its teams for traveling to meet its stakeholders."

GARY LINEKER WANTS JURGEN KLOPP FOR ENGLAND

Former England international turned BBC host Gary Lineker has suggested that the Three Lions should pursue Jurgen Klopp as Gareth Southgate's replacement.

Following England's 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday, Southgate has now announced his decision to step aside as national team manager.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast before Southgate's decision was confirmed, Lineker stated: "I think he [Southgate] has been the right person to bring the nation together in terms of the football team.

"And, now, maybe it's time for someone else with a more modern, attacking style of football. Because I think the game's gone away from being successful if you're really defensive.

"Wouldn't you go all out for Jurgen Klopp? Klopp's kind of been out of a job. He'll have had a bit of a rest."

Klopp has already rejected an approach from the United States national team and it seems extremely unlikely that he would be willing to take on the England job so quickly after his Liverpool exit at the end of last season.

LIVERPOOL 'RELAXED' OVER VIRGIL VAN DIJK FUTURE

Virgil van Dijk was ‘emotional’ last week as the Netherlands were knocked out of Euro 2024. The Dutch captain admitted he isn’t sure what his next move is - at club or international level.

"I haven't the slightest idea right now," Van Dijk said, per Reuters as relayed by the Daily Mail.

"I will think carefully this summer about what I want at club level and as an international player. Then we'll go for it again, but first recover from this.

"After a season like this, where all kinds of things have happened, it gets emotional at the end because you know it's over."

But it appears the club isn’t worrying. The Athletic claims they’re ‘relaxed about the situation’ at Liverpool after hearing their captain’s remarks.

AP published an article on Tuesday morning regarding the crowd issues during the Copa America final between Colombia and Argentina.

At the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, the venue for the final, there were chaotic scenes as fans reportedly attempted to enter the stadium without tickets.

Australia's ABC News then published a piece on the Copa America final, repeating the misinformation provided by AP that claimed the Hillsborough disaster was caused by football fans forcing their way into the stadium.

Despite retracting the information in their articles, AP and ABC News have not apologised for their mistake at the time of writing. Fans are calling on them to issue an apology immediately.

Speaking about the incident, Hillsborough Survivors Support Alliance stated on social media: "@abcnews please could someone contact us hsadirectorate@gmail.com. You really need to apologise for your article reference to Hillsborough. 35 years and still we have to defend the 97 and ourselves against people who aren't educated in the TRUTH."

The Copa America 2024 final was a disaster for organisers CONMEBOL. Thousands made their way into the stadium without tickets - including some who snuck in through the ventilation system - and that forced a halt on fans entering.

It was all chaos and virtually everyone at the ground was involved in it. That included the families of certain players, of which Alexis Mac Allister was one.

"Alexis had to leave the locker room to help us get in because he was worried," she said via ESPN.

"I thought [the game] couldn't continue. I thought the game wouldn't be played because if the players thought they would resolve this, impossible that it would be played. It was inhumane. We are okay."
