Spurs dominate but leave St James’ Park with nothing

Ange Postecoglou believes Tottenham will eventually be rewarded with results if they continue to play after having the lion's share of possession and chances but falling to a frustrating 2-1 defeat to Newcastle at St. James' Park.

The hosts twice scored against the run of play, with Harvey Barnes breaking the deadlock with a slick finish and Alexander Isak bagging a breakaway winner 12 minutes from time.

Brennan Johnson forced Dan Burn into an own goal for Tottenham's equaliser but they finished the game with 20 shots and a host of missed chances to leave Postecoglou frustrated.

"Another one that got away from us. We played well enough, certainly had the chances to win the game comfortably but you walk away with nothing, so [it's a] bitter pill to swallow but it is what it is," the head coach said.

"We created chances and if you don't get the second goal when you have the momentum...

"I thought we were in control of the game, we were playing in their half. The keeper's pulled off a couple of really good saves. We had the opportunities to test him even further but we didn't.

"The amount of chances we have, we really should be getting more than what we're getting as a return at the moment."

Spurs go into the international break with four points from a possible nine after the 1-1 draw at Leicester and 4-0 win over Everton, with Arsenal at home next up.

Postecoglou added: "The positives are our football was good and has been good in all three games. We have to get the rewards for our football and what I do know is that if we continue to play like that we will get our rewards."

The Toon are unbeaten in their first three games of the season, with two wins at St. James', and boss Eddie Howe is looking forward to focussing on football after the end of the transfer window.

"I think it's always important to try to build momentum in your season and it's been a turbulent time for the club off the pitch throughout this last transfer window," Howe said. "But that's shut now, so hopefully we can just concentrate on the football and get the players playing as well as they can."
