Portugal have made history by becoming the first team to win the UEFA Nations League twice.

They saw off Spain 5–3 on penalties after a dramatic 2–2 draw that went to extra time in the 2024/25 final, held in Munich.

It’s a big moment for Roberto Martínez, who’s now picked up his third piece of silverware as a manager.

After a flawless qualifying run for EURO 2024, his Portugal side struggled to find the net in the knockout stages and were edged out by France on penalties in the quarter-finals. But they bounced back in style this summer.

Martínez has brought fresh tactical ideas to a hugely gifted Portuguese squad, and it’s clearly starting to pay off.

But this isn’t his first taste of silverware. In fact, his first two managerial honours came in English football.

This Nations League win joins two earlier honours he picked up in English football.

His first came with Swansea, where he guided the club to the League One title in 2007/08 - his first full season as a manager, earning promotion to the Championship after 24 long years away from the second tier.

A year later, he made the move to Wigan, another of his former clubs. In his debut Premier League season, he kept them up with a 16th-place finish and pulled off some huge results, including wins over Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal.

But his defining moment at Wigan came in 2013, when he led the Latics to their first ever major trophy - an unforgettable FA Cup win over Manchester City at Wembley. That historic victory also secured European football for the club for the very first time.
