From Milan outcast to trophy-winning Palmeiras captain: the rebirth of Gustavo Gomez | OneFootball

You would have to cast your mins a few years back, but those with good memories will remember former AC Milan centre-back Gustavo Gomez, and it would be fair to say his career has taken an upturn his being a bench player with the Rossoneri.

It was back in August 2016 that Gómez completed a move to Milan for a fee reported to be in the region of €8.5m (via Wiki), signing a five-year contract and becoming the first ever Paraguayan footballer to play for the club. However, he played just 20 times in three years.

MilanNews writes how Gomez did not leave a mark in his experience at Milan but since returning to South America and to Palmeiras, his career has undergone a turning point. He has won two Copa Libertadores titles – the South American equivalent of the Champions League – and he is the captain of Palmeiras, one of the biggest and most historic teams in all of Brazil.

This year the 29-year-old has even scored 6 goals in 9 games including 3 in 2 starts as right-back, which is different to his usual position of centre-back. He is scoring once every 135 minutes on average, with only one penalty.
