From Brazil against Argentina to Juventus against Inter Milan, Bremer and Lautaro Martinez resume their hostilities this evening.
Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, highlight the rivalry that has crossed club and international boundaries.
This evening, it is basically a foregone conclusion that both Bremer and Martinez will be on the pitch in the Derby d’Italia match at the Allianz Stadium.
The former is a pillar at the back for Juventus. He is the clear first-choice in the centre of the back three.
And the man he will be marking will be Inter captain Martinez.
The 26-year-old is Inter’s leader and goalscoring talisman. So far this season Martinez has managed fourteen goals in all competitions, twelve of which have been in the league.
Martinez’s scoring rate of a goal every 82 minutes has him top of the Serie A scoring charts.
But if there’s a player capable of keeping the Inter captain quiet it’s Bremer.
The ex-Torino defender has been one of the outstanding defenders in Italy for a few seasons now.
As the Gazzetta note, though, Martinez and Bremer aren’t just rivals at club level.
The rivalry between Inter and Juventus is intense one.
But that between Brazil and Argentina is no less so.
And that was evident in the ill-tempered clash between the Selecao and the Albiceleste over the international break.
Neither Martinez nor Bremer actually started in that match.
The Inter captain came on as a late substitute to see out the narrow 1-0 victory for Argentina. And Bremer didn’t play despite being in the Brazil squad.
But this evening, the pair will have the chance to directly clash.
And as Martinez aims to get one over by scoring, and Bremer to keep the Inter striker quiet at all costs, there could be more to their battle than just the club rivalry.
