His arrival comes on the same day that Liverpool confirmed the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold to 2Real Madrid in a €10 million deal.

“Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me it was a no-brainer,” Frimpong said.

“For me, it was like, ‘Whatever you guys do, just get this done’, [speaking to] my agents: ‘Just get this done.

“Liverpool fans, I’m going to give my all, my energy, my work-rate and hopefully we can win together, we celebrate together, get everything together.

“I’m just excited to be here. Thank you guys for accepting me and I won’t let you guys down and I’ll give you the energy that you guys want.”

Frimpong arrives at Anfield with significant experience at the highest level. During his five seasons with Bayer Leverkusen, he made 190 appearances, scoring 30 goals and providing 44 assists across all competitions.

He was instrumental in Leverkusen’s historic 2023/24 season, which saw them win both the Bundesliga title and DFB-Pokal under Xabi Alonso. The Amsterdam-born defender is no stranger to English football either. He spent nearly a decade in Manchester City’s academy before moving to Celtic in 2019, where he further developed his game before earning a move to the Bundesliga.

As a result of his time in England, Frimpong qualifies as a homegrown player in both the Premier League and Champions League, providing additional squad registration flexibility for Liverpool.Frimpong’s transition to life at Liverpool will be eased by the presence of several familiar faces. He is set to link up with three of his Netherlands international teammates at Anfield: captain Virgil van Dijk, forward Cody Gakpo, and midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.

“I spoke to the manager a few times, he’s very positive,” Frimpong said of Slot. “He believes I can bring energy and speed, and when a manager talks like that about you, it gives you a lot of confidence.”
