Freya Godfrey has committed her future to London City Lionesses until 2028, following a standout loan spell from Arsenal last season.

Freya Godfrey joins London City Lionesses permanently

London City Lionesses have confirmed the permanent signing of Freya Godfrey on a contract running until the summer of 2028.

The 19-year-old forward spent the second half of last season on loan from Arsenal, making an immediate impact as the club secured promotion to the Barclays Women’s Super League.

Godfrey made her debut against Portsmouth and featured in the final eight games of the campaign.

Her influence was part of a standout run that helped London City clinch the Women’s Championship title and a historic place in the WSL.

A graduate of the Arsenal Youth Academy, Godfrey has consistently demonstrated creativity throughout her early career.

She has represented England at youth levels from Under-14 upward and previously impressed during loan spells with Ipswich Town and Charlton Athletic.

At 20-years-old, Godfrey brings both pedigree and potential to a London City side looking to establish itself in the top tier.

Reacting on her return to London City Lionesses, Godfrey shared her delight at continuing with the club where she found strong momentum last season.

“To be honest, I’m just over the moon. I think last season was a great experience for me, and it is definitely something I want to continue with, so I am very happy to be back.”

She highlighted the drama and emotion of the final match as a career-defining moment.

“The last game of last season was the highlight of my career. It was such a tough game, and we fought so hard, and that made the result ten times better. The joy and relief at the end was insane.”

With the Lionesses preparing for their first-ever WSL campaign, Godfrey is looking forward to what lies ahead.

“This season is about showing everyone what we’re about. Obviously, we’ve made some big statement signings, it shows how ambitious the club is. I’m excited to get into the WSL.”

She also underlined her own goals: “We want to compete for the top spaces, for the top leagues, the top competitions. I personally want to be a part of it, that’s why I decided to stay, and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Godfrey praises Lioness supporters after return to the club

Godfrey was also quick to praise the fans who stood by the team during their Championship-winning season.

“The fans are incredible. They definitely got us through some tough games. Blackburn at home, for example, obviously, on the final day. They were so loud, they were always showing their love, and we really appreciated it.”

The connection between player and club was clear throughout her loan spell.

“London City are such an ambitious club, the people, the players, the staff, the fans: everyone made me feel so loved and that feeling is untouchable really. I really enjoyed my time here last season, how could I say no?”
