Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore has confirmed that Callum Paterson will not need to undergo surgery to resolve his current injury issue.

Paterson picked up a muscular injury during the Owls’ meeting with Plymouth Argyle earlier this month and is set to be forced to watch on from the sidelines for a considerable period of time.

Moore is hoping that he will be able to call upon the services of the 28-year-old during the closing stages of the 2022/23 campaign.

In the absence of Paterson, the Owls managed to pick up a point in their showdown with Ipswich Town last weekend.

After taking a two-goal lead in this clash via efforts from Michael Smith and George Byers, Wednesday were pegged back as Ipswich levelled proceedings thanks to strikes from Nathan Broadhead and Leif Davis.

Currently second in the League One standings, the Owls will be aiming to widen the gap between them and the chasing pack by securing a victory in their showdown with Morecambe tomorrow.

Ahead of this game, Moore has shared a fresh update on Paterson’s injury.

Speaking to The Star about the Scotland international, Moore said: “It’s just about recovery for him, no surgery.

“It’s a muscle injury and is just going to take time.”

The Verdict

With Paterson not set to require surgery, it will be interesting to see whether he will be able to make strides in terms of his road to recovery in the coming months.

The Owls will be keen to turn to the former Hearts man for inspiration later this year as he is an influential member of their squad.

As well as providing a respectable total of six direct goal contributions in League One this season, Paterson has also managed to demonstrate his versatility as he has been deployed in a number of different positions by Moore.

When he is available for selection again, it could be argued that the forward should be eased back into action by the Owls as this will minimise the risk of him suffering another setback.

Having held their own against promotion hopefuls Ipswich in the absence of Paterson, Wednesday will be confident in their ability to push on in League One while he recovers from his current issue.
