Frenkie de Jong admits he had offers from Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City this summer before eventually signing for Barcelona.
De Jong arrived in June following his pre-agreed €75m move from Ajax, already establishing himself as a starter under Ernesto Valverde.
But things could have been different, with the Dutch international now confirming the champions of France and England were chasing him.
“If it had not been Barcelona, it’s hard for me to say now, but it probably would have been PSG or Manchester City,” he told El Periodico.
“It’s not good to talk about being motivated by money. Money is not my area – it was never a topic of discussion at meetings that I was at.
“That’s the business of my agent. Barcelona was always my because they were the club who showed me the most love.”
“The first time I heard about Barça? It was in 2018,” the 22-year-old added.
“My agent called me to say: ‘Barcelona has been interested in you, let’s talk to them.’ Listening to something like that makes you proud and flattered.”
Barça travel to Getafe on Saturday as they look to gain ground on league leaders Real Madrid.
