Manchester United’s long-term target Frenkie de Jong is on the radar of one of their greatest rivals.

Complex story with De Jong

United were heavily linked with the Dutch midfielder in the summer of 2022 and even agreed a fee with FC Barcelona for the player.

Nonetheless, he never gave the green light to a move and no transfer came to pass.

Whilst Erik ten Hag was manager of the club, United were frequently linked to a move for the FC Barcelona player but he was always insistent on staying at the Camp Nou.

Interest from Arsenal

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Man United fans may see De Jong in the Premier League soon but not in the red of United.

The site reports that “Arsenal has Frenkie de Jong’s name marked in red ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window, when his current contract with FC Barcelona expires.”

It is claimed that, “Mikel Arteta is a big admirer of the 28-year-old Dutch midfielder’s playing style. He’s coming off a great season under Hansi Flick and would be an ideal addition to the Gunners.”

The Spanish manager reportedly sees De Jong as the perfect fit alongside current midfield options Declan Rice, Martín Zubimendi and Martin Odegaard.

Complex renewal

It is stated that “Frenkie de Jong’s contract situation is generating excitement in London” as his current deal runs out next summer and there is no guarantee that an agreement will be found with the Catalans.

Barcelona have every intention to extend the player’s deal but they would need to do so with him agreeing to a significant pay cut.

Complicating issues further, De Jong is also in the process of parting ways with his current agent Ali Dursun.

Sources close to Arsenal have confirmed that the club will watch contract negotiations with interest over the coming months and will be willing to strike given the opportunity to do so.
